I also love the fact that the Book of Revelation does not “pussyfoot around”. It is very clear in its pronouncements, painting the characters in strong bold colours so that you are never in doubt about who is who. You are also left with no misunderstandings about what your destiny will be if you rebel against the Lord, nor about the path we should take to avoid such an end.
Above all, I love the revelation of the main character – guess who that is - no, none of the Antichrists! Our Lord Jesus is depicted from many angles. He is shown as the Lamb of God … and the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. He is the Alpha … and the Omega, the Beginning and the end, the Creator … and the Judge of all mankind. He is the Prophet opening the door to unseen spiritual worlds and revealing the glorious future of the human race; the Priest tending the candlesticks (the Church) and the King destined to rule the nations. He is the One who was dead and is alive and holds the keys of death and of Hades. He is the One who is able to take people of every tribe and language and people and nation and make them a kingdom and priests to our God
God promises a special blessing for this Book: “Blessed is the one who reads, as well as those who hear the words of this prophecy and pay attention to what is written in it because the time is near.” Even if you do not understand the meaning of all the prophetic symbols, if your heart is open to God you will find passages that will enrich your life. For example, many have been born again through opening the door of their hearts to the Saviour who stands knocking in Revelation 3:20.
As we read Revelation it is constantly challenging us. It challenges us to use our analytical powers. It challenges us to use our imaginative powers. It stretches parts of our minds we are not used to using! Believe it or not, this is good for us!
Finally, may I say that I love the vision of the destiny of the human race. As the New Jerusalem, descends out of heaven from God we see depicted a world of glory and beauty, a world of technology as yet undreamed of combined with nature functioning in harmony to produce at last the hoped for destiny of mankind. The peoples of the earth in all their diversity, living in unity under the Lordship of our Saviour.
